Regarding Markham's poem, "Woman." Some correspondence is from Leona Mackay, Markham's secretary. Two typescripts of Markham's poem "Woman" are included. One copy of the poem has editorial marks and manuscript notes; one copy is labeled "Mr. Markham's final copy." Also included are two typescripts of Markham's poem entitled "The Fate of the Fur Folk."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
